English
Nobility crown DarlingThe surname 'Darling' is of English origin. It is derived from the Middle English word 'derling', Old English 'deorling' meaning darling, beloved one, a derivative of 'deor' meaning dear, beloved. This was quite a common Old English byname, which remained current as a given name into the fourteenth century. The surname probably derives at least in part from this use, probably in part also from a Middle English nickname. The surname is common in Scotland and also occurs in Ireland. He emigrated to North America in 1680, aged twenty-eight, settling at Salem, Massachusetts. 'William Lafayette Darling', from St. Paul, Minnesota, was continuously employed as Consulting Engineer and Engineer of location and construction of a number of pioneer railroads from 1878 to 1916. He was also an authority on the economics of railroad construction and operation, appointed by the Secretary of the United States Navy as an Associate Member of the Naval Consulting Board and Director of the organisation for Industrial Preparedness, for the state of Minnesota in 1916. He was also a member of the Board of Railway experts to Russia, appointed in April 1916, by the United States president.
