Antica famiglia oriunda da Lucca, con memorie del sec. XIII. Le presenti generazioni si riallacciano ad un dottore Marco, che era deputato di Lucca ai Parlamenti (1379-80), il quale fu padre di Antonio, che fu infeudato di Mirabello il 5 genn. 1421 a titolo di compenso di duemila fiorini mutuati al marchese di Monferrato. Il figlio di costui, Domenico, fu investito di Mirabello nel 1447. Personaggio notevole fu il nipote suo, Bonifacio, di Giovanni Rolando, che ebbe le cariche di vicario di Casale e di senatore di Monferrato, il quale rimasto vedovo, entrò negli ordini sacri, e fu nunzio in Francia (1515). Ebbe dal pontefice Leone X la concessione di aggiungere alle sue armi la rotella d'azzurro carica dei gigli d'oro. La dignità marchionale entrò in questa famiglia con Francesco Rolando (deced. Casale, 23 febbraio 1662), che fu governatore e generalissimo dei ducati di Mantova e di Monferrato, e che ottenne la erezione di Mirabello in marchesato il 4 marzo 1637. Acquistò punti di Lu dai Grimaldi di Genova il 3 marzo 1653 e da Lucia Sanguinetti l'11 marzo 1654, ...
