Família originária da Escócia e uma das maiores e mais distintas daquele Reino. João de D. ou João Escórcio, passou a Portugal, fixando-se na ilha da Madeira, onde deixou descendência. Parece que se consorciou duas vezes; a primeira com Catarina Vaz de Lordelo, a segunda com Branca Afonso. Os seus descendentes, principalmente os das linhas femininas, procuraram estabelecer a verdadeira origem do nome apurando que João Escórcio era um filho segundo da casa de D. de Stobhall, na Escócia, cuja varonia e primogenitura (oriundas de Walter D.) se conservaram naquele país até 1878. Nesta data, sobrevindo a morte do 6.° Conde de Perth, último representante dessa linha, muitas pessoas da Madeira. Açores e Brasil pretenderam habilitar-se à herança, mas não o conseguiram por falta de documentos autênticos. Em 1519, e ainda depois, nos anos de 1604 e 1634, alguns descendentes de João Escórcio estabeleceram correspondência com os membros da família D. de Stobhall, trocando-se cartas, algumas escritas em latim. Estão publicadas no livro The Genealogy of the most noble and ancient house of D., dado à estampa em Edimburgo em 1831. O Arquivo Histórico da Madeira traduziu-as e publicou-as no seu volume III. Nessas cartas aos parentes portugueses, os nobres estrangeiros confirmaram que um filho de lord D. - que era irmão da Rainha Arabela da Escócia - fora por 1420 para França em busca de honra e fama, não tendo seus irmãos mais nenhumas notícias dele. ...
