Las noticias más antiguas que se tienen de esta noble familia, cuyo primitivo origen se desconoce, dicen que poseyó el señorío temporal del lugar de Cáncer, sito a media legua de Graus, villa del partido judicial de Benabarre, en la provincia de Huesca. Perteneció en tiempos pasados dicha villa de Graus al condado de Ribagorza. fue del dominio y señorío temporal del obispado de Barbastro, y en la antigüedad de abad de San Victorián. Los términos del lugar de Cáncer, en los que los E. tuvieron antiguo palacio, cofrontaban con los de los lugares de Barasona, Pueyo, Castarlenas, Torres, y con el río Esera. Otra casa solariega crearon los E. de Cáncer en la villa de Graus. Los E. de Mallorca: Proceden de los hermanos aragoneses Berenguer y Bernardo E., que, sirviendo a don Jaime I de Aragón, pasaron a la isla de Mallorca en tiempos de su reconquista. Berenguer obtuvo en el repartimiento de tierras el rahal Benicadell, de tres yugadas, sito en el término de Inca. Bernardo fue premiado con la alquería de Benigotmar Almohen, de cinco yugadas, en Pollensa. También se le asignó a Bernardo E. el molino de Azcefeg, en la acequia de Canet, por indiviso con el rey, y unas tierras en aquellas inmediaciones. Este mismo Bernardo E. fue cónsul de mar de Mallorca en 1248 y jurado de la ciudad y reino. Los E. o Spagnol de Malta y Valencia: En la isla de Malta hubo también una familia apellidada E. o Spagnol, distinta de las de Aragón y Mallorca. ...
