La famiglia Falchi, originaria di Cagliari, ove era ascritta al ceto nobile, venne dalla Sardegna a stabilirsi in Toscana, e precisamente a Piombino, dove ebbe cariche militari importanti. Per ordine di Cosimo III, del 14 gennaio 1720, i Falchi vennero abilitati ai maggiori onori di Volterra; il primo a goderne fu il cavalier Diego del cavalier Bartolomeo, de' Riformatori nel 1736. Questo Diego aveva sposato Maria Lucrezia, figlia di Andrea Picchinesi, il quale con codicillo 14 marzo 1716 volle che il marito della figlia aggiungesse al proprio il cognome della moglie. I Falchi Picchinesi, decorati della nobiltà di Volterra con decreto 24 dicembre 1759, furono dalla Magistratura civica di Pistoia, che volle così dimostrare l'affetto della città al proprio vescovo monsignor Francesco del cavalier Diego, proposti per l'ascrizione al patriziato pistoiese: ciò che venne accordato con decreto della Deputazione sulla Nobiltà 3 marzo 1793.
