Algunos autores acuden para explicar el origen de este apellido (de mucha antigüedad en Cataluña, Aragón, Valencia y Baleares), a la etimología de la palabra ferrer, y dicen que de la voz primitiva fer, con que los hombres designaron a la guerra, se formó la latina ferrum, y de ésta la catalana ferro, de la que se derivó la de ferrer, que significa hierro. Mosén Jaime Febrer cita a los dos caballeros Ferrer que con más antigüedad aparecen en nuestra historia y dice, refiriéndose al primero, que se llamaba Bernardo Ferrer, que descendía de los condes de Barbia, en la Gran Bretaña, y que vino a tomar parte en la Reconquista española con su hermano, un hijo y gente inglesa. Es lo más probable que estos guerreros radicaron primero en Cataluña. Luego, esto ya lo atestigua Febrer, sirvieron al rey don Jaime I de Aragón en el sitio de Valencia, renumerando ese monarca los méritos de dicho Bernardo Febrer con casas y pueblos que poseía el moro Ali-Boix. Del otro caballero inglés del apellido Ferrer, escribe el mismo tratadista lo siguiente: "Ausias Ferrer, milord de Escocia, vino a la conquista de Valencia. Estando sobre Játiva usó diferentes estratagemas contra los moros, por cuyo motivo se hicieron las capitulaciones del modo que ordenaron Ausias, Tobía y el Gobernador". Otros autores afirman que los Ferrer españoles proceden de Italia, de algunos miembros de la familia Acciavoli, que primero se llamaron Ferrero y después Ferrer. ...
