Le nom de famille est antérieur au XIVe siècle et devrait dériver du nom médiéval "Ferracutus", qui appartenait probablement à l'ancêtre. Les noms des Ferracuti sont rappelés dans des textes, actes notariés et contrats de vente de terres et de maisons depuis des temps très anciens, d'où il ressort qu'ils étaient d'une condition riche et noble. Dans la bibliographie "Dictionnaire d'érudition historique ecclésiastique" imprimée à Venise en 1860, un comte Masci-Ferracuti est mentionné, descendant du pape Nicolas IV, nommé évêque le 25 octobre 1589, qui termina sa vie à Rome et fut enterré à Santa Maria del People avec une inscription offerte par Ughelli.
