Antico e assai nobile casato del Regno delle Due Sicilie, originario di Reggio Calabria ma con diramazioni in Campania, Puglia e Sicilia. La famiglia fu confermata nella sua avita nobiltà il 31 dicembre 1594 mentre nel 1731 fu decorata del titolo marchionale e aggregata alla nobiltà di Trani, presso il seggio dell'Arcivescovado. Ancor prima, nel XIV secolo, aveva goduto nobiltà in Sicilia e successivamente un Nicolosio Ferrante, nel nome maritale, possedette il feudo di Gurafi orientale, del quale a 20 novembre 1453 ottenne investitura il figlio di lui: Giovanni. Un Camillo, di Reggio, fu decorato nel 1594 del grado di commensale e regio familiare. Un ramo della famiglia era passato a risiedere in Napoli, nel XVII secolo.
