Antica ed illustre casata italo-francese, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Europa e del mondo. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, essa ha avuto origine dall'unione, probabilmente per via matrimoniale, della nobile famiglia Minelli di Torino (Piemonte, Italia) con un ramo provenzale della nobile famiglia Fontaine (Francia), il cui cognome fu però successivamente trascritto come Fontaina, specialmente nei paesi di lingua spagnola.
