La famiglia Gadaldi si annovera tra le più antiche e nobili casate lombarde, originarie della città di Brescia. Secondo la tradizione, il cognome primigenio sarebbe stato de Adobatis, stirpe proveniente da Bassano Veneto, località nella quale già godevano di riconosciute prerogative nobiliari. Nell’estimo visconteo del 1388 si rinvengono annotati Michele de Gataldis, nonché i fratelli Paolo e Ziliolo de Gataldis nella seconda quadra di San Giovanni, e lo speziale Pecino de Gataldis nella quarta quadra della medesima contrada. I fratelli Paolo e Giliolo, già annoverati tra i Nobiles de Bassano, furono iscritti nell’estimo civico soltanto il 6 aprile 1391, probabilmente poiché solo in quell’epoca abbandonarono Bassano per stabilirsi definitivamente in Brescia, presso il crocevia oggi corrispondente a via Dante, Cairoli e G. Verdi, luogo che fino a tempi recenti fu noto con la denominazione di canton Gadaldi. Il Nassino li attesta quali provenienti da Scalve e originariamente designati come "de homacis de Imperio".
