Es un apellido muy extendido por Vizcaya, hay una anteiglesia y tres lugares del mismo nombre. Algunos autores señalan como tronco y orígen de una de las familias así apellidadas a Lope Ochoa de Avellaneda, que construyó en la villa de Sopuerta, del partido judicial de Valmaside, la torre del solar de Garay, durante el tiempo en que fue prestamero del Señorío; Contrajo matrimonio con doña Juana Pérez de Muñatores, de la que tuvo varios hijos. El tercero de éstos continuó viviendo en el solar fundado en Sopuerta por su padre. donde dejó descendencia con el apellido Garay. Otra casa hubo en Galdames, del mismo partido de Valmaseda, de la que fue José Garay de la Sota y del Cataño, Contador Honorario de los Ejércitos y Caballero de la Orden de Carlos III, en la que ingresó, el 26 de Novienbre de 1834. El 30 de Diciembre de 1829, obtuvo real provisión de hidalguía en la Chancillería de Valladolid. También hubo casas de Garay en en Guipúzcoa, Alava y Navarra. De las casas de Garay, en Navarra, citaremos las fundadas en el Valle de Lana, del Partido Judicial de Estella, y en la ciudad de Tudela. Esta última existía ya en el siglo XIII, pues Mosén Jaime Febrer dice en sus "Trovas" que desde la ciudad de Tudela, en Navarra, pasó a la guerra de Murcia García Garay, acompañados de sus tres hermanos, los cuales, como racionales langostas, talaron los sembrados de todo aquel reino, esta hazaña fue premiada por el Rey Don Jaime I de Aragón, dándole muchos bienes y tierras en la ciudad de Orihuela.También el Rey Alfonso X de Castilla, agradecio a sus servicios, les cedió muchas poseciones en Lorca. Se extendió, además, el apellido Garay por Castilla la Vieja, la Roja, Aragón y Andalucía. De la casa de Marquina procedió, según tratadista, una rama que fundó nueva casa en la villa de Villalva de la Losa, del partido judicial de Villarcayo (Burgos) y de la que fue Juan de Garay, fundador de la ciudad de Buenos Aires, el cual, a pesar de haber nacido ...
