Una vieja tradición familiar, transmitida de padres a hijos por los más ancianos miembros de esta hidalga familia ha mucho tiempo desaparecidos, cuenta que un noble caballero llamado don Pedro Sebastián de Garibay, se avecindó, en un pretérito muy lejano, en el antiguo Señorío de Vizcaya, en la anteiglesia o parroquia de Santa María de Galdácano, situada casi a orillas del camino real de Bilbao a Durango, al Sur de la Sierra de Ganguren, de la merindad de Uribe y partido judicial de Durango (Vizcaya). Y habiéndose repetido innumerables veces entre los descendientes de dicho caballero el nombre de Pedro, uno de éstos, que así se llamaba, y que, por habérsele confundido con una pariente suyo homónimo, se vió envuelto en un enojoso litigio, optó, para evitarse nuevas molestias y contrariedades, modificar su apellido Garibay, que en vascuence significa un trigo, por Gariby, que en la misma lengua vernácula quiere decir dos trigos, y ya sus hjos y descendientes siguieron apellidándose Gariby, nueva forma ortográficamente modificada por algunos en Garibi. El cambio respectivo debió haberse efectuado, cuando más tarde, en el siglo XV, ya que el ilustre historiógrafo Ludovico Pastor, en su célebre Historia de los Papas, nos habla del Beato Fray Jerónimo de G., de la Orden de San Francisco, martirizado en China con otros religiosos españoles, en el año de 1502. ...
