Nei pubblici annali della Comunità di Udine (Acta LXXXI), si trova nominato nel 1669 fra i cittadini popolari un tal Francesco quondam Giovanni Batta, dal quale è derivata, a quanto sembra, questa nobile famiglia goriziana. Essa appare nella sua nuova residenza, Gorizia, nella prima metà del 700. Acquistata una certa importanza per censo e per cariche, essa fu elevata al grado di nobile del S.R.I. dall'imperatrice Maria Teresa con diploma dato a Vienna del 19 novembre 1760 nella persona di Francesco Giovanni, podestà gastaldo di Gorizia. Oltre la nobiltà il sovrano gli concesse il predicato di Steinbrunn, che ora, a norma delle recenti disposizioni, fu tradotto in Fontesasso.
