Nobile famiglia che ha tratto origine da Giussano, oggi comune lombardo fortemente industrializzato. La leggenda narra che, nei lontani secoli medioevali, vi pose dimora una famiglia di stirpe longobarda, ricca e distinta, imparentata con i Confalonieri e con i Casati. Il mitico capostipite sarebbe Alberto, comandante della Compagnia della Morte attorno al Carroccio, durante la famosa battaglia di Legnano del 1176. Successivamente, stando a quanto riporta il Rossi, la famiglia prese residenza anche in Milano, in un proprio turrito palazzo nel rione di Porta Nuova. Alcuni Giussani abbracciarono l'eresia dei Catari, i quali tenevano adunanze nel castello di Gatedo presso Carugo, e cooperarono con Stefano Confalonieri a tramare l'uccisione di S. Pietro Martire, avvenuta nel 1252 presso Barlassina.
