Escriben algunos autores, que este apellido es patronímico porque procede del nombre propio Godino, muy usado entre los godos; pero su origen se remonta, por lo tanto, al imperio visigótico, y que entre los caballeros que ayudaron en Asturias a don Pelayo, al iniciarse la reconquista, había algunos que se llamaban G. Añaden los aludidos tratadistas que los Godino o G., de Asturias, pasaron luego a Portugal y poblaron en Coimbra, siendo descendiente de ellos un caballero portugués llamado Godino, que fué padre de doña Elvira G., mujer de Alboazar Ramírez (hijo natural del Rey don Ramiro II de León), y ambos padres de Trastamiro y Hermegio, de los que proceden ilustres familias en Portugal y Galicia. Otros autores señalan el origen de este linaje en tierra de Monteroso (Galicia) y dicen que su primer solar fué el Castro o Castillo de Ambarria, distante media legua de San Miguel de Peñas, del que salió el apellido de Gudin, transformado después en Godín y Godino y más tarde en G. Y esta dedución la refuerzan con la cita que hacen de haber florecido en la ciudad de Salamanca, en tiempos muy antiguos, un caballero llamado Gómez de Gudín, que consideran tronco de los G. salmantinos.
