Nobility crown GontaudCette maison est incontestablement l'une des plus considérables et des plus illustres de France. Connue en Périgord dès le XIIème siècle, elle a fourni, outre un grand nombre de gouverneurs, de sénéchaux de provinces, des capitaines de cent et cinquante hommes d'armes, la plupart décorés de l'Ordre du roi, des colonels et mestres de camp d'infanterie et de cavalerie, quatre maréchaux et un vice-amiral de France, six chevaliers de l'Ordre du Saint-Esprit, onze lieutenants-généraux, huit maréchaux des camps et armées du roi et un lieutenant-général des armées navales. Elle a donné aussi plusieurs prélats distingués à l'Eglise; des conseillers d'Etat et des ambassadeurs et ministres plénipotentiaires dans presque toutes les cours de l'Europe. Depuis le XIIème siècle elle possède la baronnie de Biron, qui fut érigée en duché-pairie par Henry IV, en juin 1598, en faveur de Charles, maréchal de France. Ce titre fut éteint en 1602 par la mort de ce dernier, mais rétabli en 1723 sur la tête de son petit-neveu Charles-Armand, mort doyen des maréchaux de France. Dans les admissions aux honneurs de la cour figure en 1779 la comtesse de Gontaud-Biron, et dans les assemblées de la noblesse aux États-Généraux de 1789, on voit cette maison représentée en Périgord, en Quercy, où le Duc de Biron fut nommé deputé; en Limousin, en Saintonge, dans le Maine et dans l'Isle de France. ...
