Les armes de cette maison sont décrites dans l'Armorial de la Noblesse par Borel d'Hauterive, année 1888. Le même auteur donne à cette famille une origine écossaise. Le premier du nom d'Otard, fixé en Périgord, figure dans un acte de 1705, conservé dans l'étude des notaires de Saint-Privat, avec les qualifications de: sieur de Lagrange, bourgeois de Saint-Privat-des-Prés, canton de Saint-Aulaye (Dordogne). Le fils, Jacques Otard, acquit en 1770 la charge de secrétaire du roi, maison et couronne de France, de la chancellerie du parlement de Toulouse. C'est là l'origine de la noblesse des Otard; ils se sont qualifiés dès lors d'écuyers, et de nos jours, l'on voit, au sixième degré de filiation, Jean-Auguste porter le titre de baron Otard de La Grange, et même de la Grange O'Tard. Le grand-père de ce dernier (qui, le 10 juillet 1889, a marié sa fille Marie-Thérèse, au vicomte Henry de Castellane), Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Otard, ingénieur, négociant, maire de Cognac, député de la Charente, chevalier de la Légion-d'Honneur, fonda à Cognac, en 1796, une imporante maison de commerce d'eau-de-vie qui a fait la grande fortune de la famille. ...
