Discuten extensamente los autores sobre el orígen del noble linaje de este apellido, haciendo largas incursiones por la historia, en las que no podemos seguirles nosotros, dada la índole de esta obra. Resumiendo, diremos que coinciden los más autorizados tratadistas en afirmar que del caballero Sancho de Guevara, salvador y protector del Rey Sancho Abarca, procedió el Conde don Vela de Guevara, muy nombrado en varias crónicas y privilegios antigüos; que ese Conde adquirío el Señorío de Oñate y que no queriendo someterse a la autoridad del Conde de Castilla Fernán Gonzaléz fue desterrado y se pasó a los moros, aunque después una vez perdonado, regresó a su tierra. Añaden esos autores que el Conde don Vela de Guevara, tuvo estos hijos: Iñigo Velaz o Vela, Rodrigo y Diego y que los tres fueron también desterrados de Castilla por lo que se pusieron al servicio de los Reyes de León; pero por haber dado muerte a traición a don García, hijo y sucesor del también Conde de Castilla Sancho García, fueron muertos a su vez por orden del Rey de Navarra Sancho el Mayor. Otro caballero que los genealogistas mencionan como uno de los más antigüos y notables del linaje de Guevara, fué Ladrón Vélez de Guevara, Señor de la casa de Guevara, a quien el Rey de Navarra García Ramírez, el Restaurador, dió el título de Conde y después tuvo el de príncipe de Navarra, como consta de la fundación que hizo de un mayorazgo en la villa de Oñate. El apellido Guevara se extendiò mucho por España, fundando nuevas casas y ramas en diversas regiones. Podemos mencionar entre estas regiones, a Segura Fuenterrabia y Unzueta, tambièn en Guipùzcoa. Otra en el lugar de Villodas, del Ayuntamiento de Iruña y partido judicial de Vitoria, en Alava, otra en el lugar de Murga, del Ayuntamiento de Alaya y partido judicial de Amurrio, tambièn en Alava.
