Der Überlieferung zufolge stammt sie aus Liefland; der erste heraldisch erwähnte Vertreter ist jedoch ein Christian Hinkeldey aus Wiesen an der Lühe bei Hamburg, der sich 1679 erstmals in Nördlingen niederließ. Und tatsächlich ist diese Familie heraldisch als Patrizier von Nördlingen (Schwaben, Bayern) und Reichsadel eingetragen. George Hinkeldey, Sohn von Christian, war Diakon von Nördlingen und starb dort 1736. Hieronimus Heinrich Hinkeldey (1720 – 1805), ein hervorragender Jurist, war Geheimrat in Löwenstein-Wertheim, Kanzler und Gesandter beim Fränkischen Reichskreis. Am 7. März 1754 erhielt er die Bestätigung des erblichen Adels mit dem Ehrentitel „von“.
