Les armes de cette maison sont décrites dans le Grand Armorial de France, registre de Périgueux, sous le nom de François, seigneur du Caillaud. Dans l'armorial manuscrit écrit vers la fin du XVIIème siècle, elles sont énencées simplement sous le nom de Louis, seigneur de Montardit, habitant au château du Caillaud, commune de Sorges: Écartelé de guaules et d'argent, l'écu timbré d'un casque. Cette maison, que l'on voit qualifiée, dans les XIVème et XVème siècle, du titre de damoiseau, a pris son nom, si elle ne le lui a pas donné, du repaire noble de Lagut, canton de Mussidan. En 1359, Guy, damoiseau, seigneur de Muriac, nomma pour son héritier universel Guillaume, damoiseau de Grignols, à la charge par lui de faire porter le nom de Lagut par l'un de ses fils, clause qui ne fut pas exécutée, ledit Guillaume étant mort sans postérité. Près de 300 ans plus tard, ce nom s'est incorporé a celui de Penaud, par suite d'une concession faite, le 26 février 1646, par Jean, seigneur de Montardit, à honorable Pierre Penaud, habitant de Mussidan, mariè à Marguerite fille dudit seigneur, de tous droits, rentes, fiefs, fondalité et devoirs seigneuriaux à lui dus à cause de la maison noble de Lagut, juridiction de Mussidan, pour en jouir comme bon lui semblera et à perpétuité. C'est ainsi que depuis cette époque la famille de penaud s'est appelée de Lagut et le plus souvent de Lagut seul et en a fait reivivre les armes. ...
