Ana de Mendonça recolheu-se no mosteiro das Comendadeiras de Santos, em Lisboa, onde viveu honestamente e aí faleceu. Eram seus irmãos Jorge Furtado de Mendonça, comendador das Enstradas, de Sines e da Repressa, camareiro de seu sobrinho D. Jorge, e António de Mendonça Furtado, comendador de Veiros, do Cano, de Serpa e de Moura, na Ordem de Avis. Tomou D. Jorge o apelido de L., que lhe vinha por sua trerceira avó a Rainha D. Filipa de L., mulher de D. João I, filha do Duque de L. e irmã do Rei de Inglaterra. D. Jorge foi muito estimado do Rei seu pai que, morrendo-lhe em 1491 seu único filho legítimo, o Príncipe D. Afonso, de uma queda de cavalo, intentou instituir herdeiro do trono o bastardo, ao que se apôs a Rainha D. Leonor, sua mulher, que pretendia ficasse sucessor da Coroa seu irmão D. Manuel, Duque de Beja, o que se deu. D. Jorge de L. foi Duque de Coimbra poor mercê de D. Manuel I, senhor de Montemor-o-Novo e de muitas outras terras e mestre da Ordema de Sant'Iago.
