Der erste Charakter, den wir kennen, ist ein Gualtiero Leto, der 1298 ein Kastellan von Catania und 1301 Botschafter bei König Federico II. War. Diese Familie ist in Catania, Castrogiovanni, Polizzi, Polignano und Neapel sehr edel und befindet sich in Familienbesitz: die Baronien Capodarso (1399), Priolo (1514), Cammisini und Lo Piro, Gasba, Passanitello, Castrogiovanni sowie die Herzogtümer Polignano und San Martino. Ein Benedikt, Baron von Passanitello, dessen Privileg am 26. Juni 1607 verliehen und am 5. September 1608 hingerichtet wurde, erhielt ebenfalls den Titel Don. Ein heute ausgestorbener Familienzweig hat den Marquis-Titel genossen.
