Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, essa è originaria del Friuli Venezia-Giulia ed infatti vuolsi sia appartenuta alla nobiltà civica di Udine. I più antichi riferimenti a questa famiglia si hanno già nel XVI secolo quando annoveravasi tra le proprietarie terriere di Palmada, oggi Palmanova. Alcuni rami familiari risultano fioriti anche in territorio veneto, ove spesso il cognome fu trascritto nella forma Lisotti. In ogni modo, questa pregevole casata, nel susseguirsi delle epoche, è sempre riuscita a distinguersi grazie all'alta caratura dei suoi rappresentanti.
