A família dos Lobos é uma das mais ilustres da Península, porquanto provém dos senhores de Biscaia. O Conde D. Lopo Dias, nono senhor soberano de Biscaia, Nagera e Castela-a-Velha, falecido no ano de 1170, foi casado com D. Aldonça Rodrigues de Castro, filha de D. Rodrigo Fernandes de Casro o Calvo, rico-homem, senhor de Cuellar e de sua mulher, D. Estevainha Pires, de cujo matrimónio teve D. Pedro Lopes, morador em Castro de Urdiales, na Cantábria, de quem nasceu D. Paio Peres. D. Paio Peres, que viveu também em Casro de Urdiales, acompanhou seu primo coirmão, D. Lopo Dias de Haro, senhor de Biscaia, quando D. Fernando, o Santo, o nomeou por general na conquista de Baeça, tomando a cidade aos Mouros a 30 de Novembro de 1227 com trezentos cavaleiro infanções, filhos de ricos-homens. Casou-se com D. Sancha e foi pai de D. Pedro Pais L., que contraiu matrimónio com D. Maior de Moscoso, filha de Fernão Gonçalves de Moscoso, e, passando a Portugal, teve do Rei D. Sancho a mercê do senhorio da terra de Basto. Era primo de D. Mécia Lopes de Haro, a quem acompanhou quando veio casar com o soberano português, que o estimou como parente. D. Pedro Pais L. teve geração, pela qual se continuou o apelido. A D João L., bispo de Tânger, pelos serviçoes prestados na África, no Reino e fora dele, com muita dilgência e fidelicade, tanto a El-Rei D. Manuel I, como a sua irmã a Rainha D. Leonor, lhe acrescentou o mesmo monarca as armas, por Carta de 24 de Junho de 1506. ...
