Il primo membro della famiglia di cui abbiamo notizia storica è un Ambrosius de Lomatio, cavaliere milanese, citato in un atto del 4 marzo 1444. Il 26 aprile 1538 nacque in Milano Gian Paolo, celeberrimo pittore e trattatista dell'età del Manierismo, figura di spicco della cultura artistica italiana della seconda metà del Cinquecento. I suoi scritti sono tra i migliori ritratti retrospettivi della grande stagione del Rinascimento lombardo, il cui culmine aveva coinciso con la rivoluzione innescata da Leonardo da Vinci a Milano.
