Família nobre de Itália que antes de 1276 já figurava entre as vinte e oito mais antigas de San Gimigliano, em cuja cidade se admira uma poderosa torre que lhe pertenceu até o século XIV. Durante séculos a família dos L. teve sempre uma galera armada no porto de Pisa e desde o ano de 1200 foi senhora do território da Montione, onde possuía castelo. Em 1382, estava incluída no Catálogo da Nobreza de Roma, mandado organizar pelo Papa Urbano VI, e me 1621 teve o patriciado romano, de jure. Conserva esta família como tradição sagrada o ter doado a S. Francisco de Assim um terreno no seu domínio de Montione, sobre o qual se levantou um dos treze oratórios fundados pelo Santo e em cujo lugar se construiu, mais te«arde, o famoso mosteiro de Santa Maria de la Spineta. Teve esta família, até ao ano de 1737, sepultura na capela do mesmo convento. Diversos membros da família dos L. passaram ao estrangeiro, conhecendo-se em Portugal desde o século XVIII. Vicente L., natural de Roma, filho de Miguel Ângelo L. e de Vicência L., em 1791, contando dezoito anos de idade embarcou em Lisboa em a nau Nossa Senhora da Conceição e Santo António, que partiu do Tejo a 29 de Março, chegando a Goa em 28 de Janeiro do ano seguinte. Um irmão de Vicente L., por nome Francisco L., vivia em Lisboa no princípio do século XIX, exercendo o ofício hereditário de Registatore delle Bolle e Brevi di Nunziatura.
