Noble y antigua familia asturiana que se formó por el entronque de los Méndez de esta región con los Vigo, cuyo apellido habían tomado de una pequeña aldea del mismo nombre, sita también en el Principado de Asturias. Según una certificación expedida en Madrid el 19 de Septiembre de 1770, por don Ramón Zazo y Ortega, Cronista y Rey de Armas de don Carlos III, a favor de Joaquín M. de Vigo y Fernández Cueto, los Méndez entroncaron con los Vigo procedían de Pedro Méndez, caballero asturiano de ilustre linaje, que casó en Cabrafigal (parroquia de Villapedra, Asturias), con doña María Fernández, de la que tuvo, entre otros hijos, a Pedro Méndez y Fernández, llamado también Pedro Méndez de Cabrafigal, por el lugar de su nacimiento, bautizado en Villapedre el 1º de Marzo de 1638 y casado con doña Marina Fernández del Barrio (hija de Fernando Alonso Fernández del Barrio). Estos esposos trasladaron su residencia al pequeño pueblo de Vigo, del Concejo de Navia (Asturias), donde tuvieron, entre otros hijos, a Alonso M. de Vigo y Fernández del Barrio, que fué el primero que comenzó a llamarse M. de Vigo, opr el lugar de su nacimiento, en donde sus padres tenían varias heredades. Pero no vivía en el mencionado lugar, sino que se avecindó en el lugar costero de Puerto de Vega, en el mismo Concejo de Navia, y en el que contrajo matrimonio con doña María Suárez de Vigo el 15 de Marzo de 1693.
