Procede el ilustre linaje que lleva por apellido el patronímico M., de la real casa de Celanova, en Galicia, y reconoce por tronco al rey godo Egica, que empezó a reinar en España por los años de 687, y fué sobrino del rey Wamba, que casó con Egilona, hija del rey Ervigio, su antecesor. El conde Don Hermenegildo M., casó con Doña Ermesinda Arias, señora de la villa de Puerto Marin en el obispado de Lugo, de la casa y familia de los Arias de Sirgal, descendientes del muy católico rey suevo de Galicia Arias Miro, de cuyo matrimonio tuvo por hijos al conde Don Gutierre Arias M., a Nepociano M. y a Doña Milena o Elvira M. El dicho Don Hermenegildo M. fué conde en Tuy, general en aquellas fronteras, varón prudentísimo y de gran consejo en lo político y militar, mayordomo mayor del rey Don Alonso III; en cuyo tiempo, segun refiere la historia, se rebeló un caballero y gran soldado llamado Witiza, fiado en sus fuerzas y valentía, con muchos que le siguieron contra dicho monarca, perseverando siete años en su obstinacion; al cabo de los cuales el conde Don Hermenegildo M. vino con él a batalla, le venció, prendió y trajo a la presencia del rey, quien le condenó á perpétua cárcel, confiscando sus bienes y tierras, con las cuales premió el valor y lealtad del espresado conde Don Hermenegildo M. No fueron menos eminentes sus hijos, pues el primero, Don Gutierre Arias M., quedó con todos los oficios y dignidades de su padre, y fué el que se nombró conde de Celanova. Con el descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo, muchos fueron los hombres y mujeres que cruzaron el Atlántico en busca de nuevos horizontes, y en concreto los que portando el apellido Méndez, extendieron su linaje por América.
