Paolo di Ugo del Bava, adottato dalla famiglia Maffei nel 1525, dopo avere sposato Lucilla Maffei nel 1507. Egli fu ammesso alla cittadinanza fiorentina nel 1555, nel gonfalone Scala, mentre in precedenza erano nel gonfalone Lion d'oro. Nel 1757 i componenti della famiglia vennero ammessi al patriziato di Volterra. Sembra che da questa famiglia volterrana discendano molte altre famiglie residenti in varie parti d'Italia.
