Família antiga, que tomou apelido da Torre de Magalhães, na freguesia de São Martinho de Paço Vedro, termo da Barca. Parece que o primeiro que usou o apelido foi Afonso Rodrigues de Magalhães, cuja ascendência não se conhece com certeza, embora seja verosímil que ele provenha do de Novais. Foi senhor da Torre de Magalhães, no ano de 1312. Tinha ração no mosteiro de Tibães e do seu casamento com D. Alda Martins de Castelões, filha de João Martins de Castelões, o Moço, dos quais foi neto outro Afonso Rodrigues de Magalhães, Senhor da dita Torre e Alcaide-Mor do Castelo da Nóbrega em 1372, casado com D.Teresa de Andrade, filha do Mestre da Ordem de Cristo D.Nuno Freire de Andrade. Dela teve vários filhos, de entre os quais, o mais velho, Gil Afonso de Magalhães, a quem D.João I confirmou em 1387 as terras de seus antepassados, doando-lhe ainda em 1425 a Torre de Lindoso. De entre os ilustres ramos dos Magalhães, salientam-se nos séculos XV e XVI o celebérrimo navegador Fernão de Magalhães, ou Gil Eanes de Magalhães, chamado o Cavaleiro, por o ser da Ordem da Jarreteira, na Inglaterra, no século XVII o Jesuíta gabriel de Magalhães e uma infinidade de outros que se notabilizaram nas armas, nas ciências e na religião. ...
