Una prima notizia si ha di un Malaguza in una pergamena del 1144 nell'Archivio Capitolare di Reggio E. Egli faceva parte di un Consorzio gentilizio detto dei "Bianchi"" di Lunigiana, nella linea dei consignori di Rubiera. Nel 1159, era già morto, lasciando tre figli, Rodolfo, Pietricino e Riccia, dai quali vennero tre rami della famiglia: ma solo quello di Rodolfo continuò fino ai giorni nostri. Già al principio del secolo XIII il patronimico di Malaguza erasi trasformato nel cognome Malaguzzi. Nel 1218 Nerio, faceva parte del consiglio generale del Comune di Reggio e parecchi della famiglia ebbero in quei tempi cariche pubbliche in Reggio: così Enrichetto, giudice dei marcanti di Reggio nel 1264.
