Os genealogistas espanhóis apontam-lhe como mais antigas origens a região de Guipúzcoa, sem contudo indicarem em qual das localidades basco-navarras tiveram o seu berço mais remoto. Sabe-se é que daí se espalharam, posteriormente, pelos diferentes reinos peninsulares onde fundaram novas casas solarengas. Adiantam, ainda, que se ligaram a famílias de igual lustre, havendo vários Marcenal que apresentaram provas da antiguidade do uso deste apelido para ingresso nas Ordens de Santiago, calatrava, Alcântara e Montesa, existindo documentação sobre eles nas Reais Chancelarias de Valladolid e Granada e na real Audiência de Oviedo, tendo outros que pertenceram à Armada provado a sua nobreza para entrar na Real Compañia de Guardias Marinos.
