Antica ed assai nobile casata della Frisia, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni europee. Il ramo giunto in Italia si insediò prevalentemente nel Regno di Napoli. La chiara nobiltà di questa illustre casata risulta confermata dalla sua presenza in alcune delle più pregevoli opere araldiche europee, tra cui il monumentale "Armorial Général" dell'araldista e genealogista olandese Johannes Rietstap (Rotterdam, 12 maggio 1828 – L'Aia, 24 dicembre 1891). In Frisia questa nobile famiglia appare presente sin almeno dal XIII secolo. Il personaggio più celebre è certamente Hessel Martena, leggendario podestà della Frisia (1306-1313) che la protesse dagli attacchi dei conti d'Olanda. La sua discendenza continuò per linee collaterali, non avendo egli avuto figli maschi.
