Originaria di Arezzo e trapiantata in Cesena nel 1410. Prima di quest'epoca chiamavasi Tarlazzi, come si rileva da una iscrizione posta nel sepolcro di un cardinale di questa famiglia esistente nella cattedrale di Assisi. Il cronista cesenate, Mauro Verdoni, narra di un Martino de' Conti Bernardini Della Massa che sul principio del XV secolo, oltre essere stato uomo erudito e valoroso, per vigoria d'ingegno e d'animo celeberrimo, ebbe le lodi del Principe Andrea Malatesta mentre correva un torneo in Rimini, creandolo nel tempo stesso cavaliere. Guidobaldo della Rovere Duca d'Urbino gli diede in feudo i territori di Castro, Massa e Casalecchio. Servì anche la Repub. di Venezia come capitano e combattè valorosamente contro i Turchi.
