L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nel nome medioevale germanico "Metzi", appartenuto, probabilmente, ad un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. Tal casato, poi, in ogni epoca, sempre riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali. Tra questi, ricordiamo: Matteo, dottore in "utroque jure", vivente nel 1650; P.
