Antica ed assai nobile famiglia sarda, alla quale fu concesso il titolo di Don, con residenza in Sassari, le cui prime notizie rimontano al secolo decimo quarto, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di autorevoli genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in un soprannome originato dal termine sardo "milia" (= belato), forse ad indicare nel capostipite un pastore. In ogni modo, tale casata apparteneva all'oligarchia comunale e seppe avvicinarsi agli Aragonesi. Nel 1423 ebbe il cavalierato ereditario con un Antonio, che, nel 1428, ebbe la generosità; nel 1439 ebbe, con un Giovanni nuovi riconoscimenti. Un Francesco Milia si sposò con Maddalena Gambella ed i loro figli, nel 1490, aspirarono all'eredità dei feudi Gambella, senza successo.
