Cette maison d'ancienne Noblesse du Périgord, connue dès le Xème siècle, tirait son origine du lieu d'Agonac, où elle possédait un château de son nom, encore existant, que Frotaire évêque de Périgueux, avait fait bàtir en 980, avec trois autres qui entouraient le sien, popur lui servir de défense contre les invasions des Normands qui pillaient et ravageaient le pays.
