Antico ed assai nobile casato spagnolo, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni di Spagna e del Meridione d'Italia. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, esso è originario della provincia La Rioja, nella Spagna settentrionale. I maggiori insediamenti si ebbero nelle città di Fuentemayor, nel distretto giudiziario di Logroño, e di Anguiano, nel distretto giudiziario di Nájera. Un altro importante ramo fiorì invece nella regione di Santillana del Mar e più precisamente in Santander. Sempre vicini alla Corona, i Nicolao servirono come cavaliere re Giacomo I nella conquista di Maiorca. Fedelissimi dunque agli Aragona, alcuni di loro si portarono in Sicilia al tempo del re Ludovico. Ivi la famiglia rifulse parimenti per nobiltà ma il cognome fu italianizzato in Nicola benché alcune diramazioni si siano poi riappropriate dell'originale nome loro.
