Originaria dunque della Normandia, tal famiglia fu signora di Bretteville, Trassepied, Bossy e Tertre. Gli inizi del casato risalgono al 1050-1100 ma il primo personaggio di cui abbiamo notizia storica certa è il cavaliere Jean Le Normand, fiorente in Falaise (Normandia) nel 1470. La nobiltà della famiglia fu riconosciuta dalla corte di Normandia il 3 luglio 1593, con successive conferme in data 11 febbraio 1603 e 23 marzo 1629, e dalla corte francese il 2 luglio 1605, con successive conferme del 7 febbraio 1641 e 1 gennaio 1699. Un nipote del predetto cavaliere, Guillaume Le Normand, scudiero, figlio di un notaio reale, portò sua discendenza in Châtellerault (Nuova Aquitania), ove morì nel 1588 circa.
