Este apellido es patronímico, derivado del nombre propio de "Nuño", y está muy difundido por España y América. La familia Núñez que florenció en Játiva tenía gran antigüedad y nobleza. Era originaria de Aragón y sus primeros ascendientes habían servido en sus conquistas al rey aragonés don Jaime I. Perteneció a esa familia Juan Núñez, señor de Semper, en la huerta de Játiva, lugar que le rentaba ciento treinta libras anuales, con setenta casas de vasallos. Tenía en dicho lugar la jurisdicción civil, por pertenecer a Játiva la jurisdicción criminal. De la misma familia fueron Jorge y Francisco Núñez, hermanos de Jerónimo Núñez, regente del Consejo Supremo de Aragón, y su sobrino Juan Núñez, insigne filósofo y humanista. De Aragón es originaria la familia Núñez, de Mallorca, y su antigüedad comprobada alcanza los tiempos del rey aragonés don Jaime I "el Conquistador". Era de notoria nobleza y aumentó el lustre de la familia mallorquina de San Juan al unirse con ésta a últimos del siglo XVI. Algunas de sus líneas se apellidaron N. Pedro Núñez pasó desde Aragón a la conquista de Mallorca, y en el reparto general de aquellas tierras le tocaron quince yugadas de la alquería Xilvar, hoy villa de Selva, del partido judicial de Inca, y una de las casas cupieron al rey dentro de la Almudaina, llamada "Larbec d'en Alborzaró". En 1256 asistió en calidad de testigo a la confirmación que hizo el rey don Jaime I de todas las franquezas concedidas a los mallorquines. Otra casa muy antigua. Apellido patronímico, derivado del nombre propio del Nuño, sin que tengan relación entre sí las distintas familias españolas que usan esta denominación. Muchas de ellas probaron su nobleza en diversas épocas en las Reales Chancillerías y en las Ordenes Militares. Varios Caballeros de nombre y apellido Juan N. intervinieron en la conquista de Tenerife y se hallaron entre sus primeros pobladores.
