La celebre famiglia italiana dei Pallavicini si divise in molti rami, uno dei quali estintosi venne surrogato da uno dei Rospigliosi che ne assunse il cognome. Fra gli altri ecclesiastici di questa famiglia un Antoniotto fu nel 1489 creato cardinale da Innocenzo VIII (Cibo), quello stesso che nel 1507 fu da Giulio II spedito legato apostolico a Savona per trattare con Lodovico XII re di Francia e Ferdinando il Cattolico la Lega contro i Veneziani ed un Lazzaro posteriormente fu pure creato cardinale da Clemente IX (Rospigliosi) il 29 novembre 1669. Morto questi ricchissimo nel 1680, ultimo della sua linea, fondò una primogenitura in favore di Giovanni Rospigliosi, marito di sua pronipote Camilla Pallavicini, con l'obbligo di assumere il cognome e lo stemma Pallavicini, nonchè il titolo di principe di Gallicano, principato da lui acquistato da Casa Colonna nel 1670, stabilendo pure un patto di famiglia che permette diverse sostituzioni ...
