Antica ed assai nobile famiglia piemontese, oriunda da Fossano ma poi passata in Savigliano, la quale risulta fregiata del titolo di consignori di Levaldigi. La più antica memoria di tal nobile famiglia, chiamata originariamente Pavo, Paonus de Pavoto e quindi Pavone, Pavoni e Paoni, è quella relativa ad un "Obertus Pavo", dell'antico Romanisio, nel territorio di Fossano, il quale, con altri gentiluomini, prestava fedeltà al comune di Asti, il 21 Giugno 1193, nel claustro della chiesa prepositorale di San Pietro, nelle mani del procuratore della Repubblica Astese.
