Antica ed assai nobile famiglia tedesca, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Europa e del mondo. Essa ebbe la propria culla nella città di Teschen. In detta città fioriva infatti il commerciante Johann Paust, talvolta trascritto come Jonas Paust, che, in data 10 gennaio 1604, venne elevato alla nobiltà, con la concessione del predicato di "von Liebstadt". Lo stesso fu contemporaneamente ricevuto nella società dei cavalieri ("Inkolat") boemi. Nell'anno 1610, poco prima della sua morte, avvenuta il 9 novembre di quell'anno, Johann Paust accrebbe ulteriormente le proprietà familiari, acquistando le tenute di Scharfenstein e Gross-Bukowin, in Boemia. Sua figlia Anna, sposata con Haubold von Starschedl (1615), era proprietaria di Scharfenstein, Benesov e Gross-Buckowin, nell'anno della morte del marito.
