Es tradición, conservada desde tiempos muy antiguos y robustecida con los datos que aportan historiadores de reconocida autoridad, que los de este linaje traen su origen de un conde de Tolosa que prestó grandes servicios al emperador Carlomagno y que se apellidaron P., porque un don Ramón Beltrán, descendiente del aludido conde, "acertó un día a encontrarse con un enemigo suyo en una puente de río muy larga y angosta, y sin llevar cuenta del peligro de su angostura, se combatió con él hasta derribarle en el río, de donde sacó juntamente victoria y el apellido P. (en catalán "peligroso"), por haber sido tan peligroso el lugar de la pelea". Así lo cuenta Gaspar Escolano. Así lo refiere también Martín de Viciana. Y mosén Jaime Febrer, aunque en sus Trovas no hace mención de ese suceso, confirma que este linaje era originario de Tolosa (Francia) desde tiempos de Carlomagno, al hablar del caballero Raimundo P. del que dice: "Habiendo sido mal herido de punta de lanza en las dos jornadas que hizo a Mallorca, en compañía del rey don Jaime I, convaleció, quedando ágil para la guerra; y en las emboscadas que en el sitio de Valencia, se hicieron fue siempre el primero. Viene su origen de Tolosa, gozando de muchos privilegios desde el tiempo de Carlomagno, y su valor fue bien reconocido en Murcia y Orihuela".
