L'attuale forma cognominale Petronzi è l'italianizzazione del cognome Petrovich o Petrović. Vuolsi infatti che essa sia un ramo della nobile prosapia bosniaca di origine russa Petrovich. Essa passò infatti a risiedere in Dalmazia già nel secolo decimosesto, ove parimenti fu annoverata tra le casate nobili, e successivamente si divise in vari rami: alcuni si insediarono in Veneto ed in Friuli, mantenendo l'originario cognome o adottando la forma Petroviz; altri passarono nel Meridione d'Italia ove la mutazione cognominale fu più invasiva: Petronzi o Petronzo.
