Note: Di origine spagnuola, la si trova immigrata in Italia fin dal XIII secolo, divisa in due rami, uno de' quali si stabilì in Piemonte e l'altro passò nel Napoletano. Quivi dai Re Angioini un Goffredo Petitti ottenne la investitura del castello di Rovito in Calabria. Giovanni Petitti, detto Cerbellione, fu generalissimo dell'armata di Carlo Vili, poi si riavvicinò a Ferdinando il Cattolico, suo signore naturale, da cui fu largamente beneficato. I suoi discendenti sostennero nel reame cariche eminenti e vi acquistarono ricche e vaste possessioni, fra le quali il feudo di Ferrazzano nel Sannio con titolo baronale. Gennaro fu intendente della provincia di Basilicata, e Pompilio, di lui cugino, fu anch'egli intendente di varie provincie, poi procuratore generale della R. Corte dei Conti in Palermo ed in Napoli, e più volte funzionò come ministro dell'interno fino al 1860, e pubblicò parecchie opere, fra le quali il tanto lodato Repertorio amministrativo.
