Nobility crown PioFamille très ancienne et illustre, de noblesse claire et éprouvée, dont les origines remontent à la soi-disant "coterie féodale des Fils de Manfredo", sont également nées les familles Pico, Papazzoni, Padelli, Azzolini et Fanti. En tout cas, la famille reconnaît son géniteur en un Bernardo, fils de Manfredo. Le fils dudit Bernardo, un certain Pio, est rappelé comme citoyen de Modène en 1168, maire de la même commune (1177 - 1178) et recteur de la Ligue lombarde, aux congrès de Ferrare et de Parme, pour la paix avec Federico Barberousse. La branche de la famille des seigneurs de Carpi dérive de Pio et de ses descendants, qui y régnèrent de 1319 à 1525. Manfredi I (1269 - 1348), neveu de Bernardo, fut en effet le vicaire impérial de Modène entre 1329 et 1336 ensemble à son cousin Guido Pio, obtenant ainsi le fief de Carpi des Estensi. Au fil des siècles, cette famille s'est illustrée grâce à de nombreux évêques et maires dans diverses villes, au service des Visconti puis à partir de 1450 à la Savoie. Au XVe siècle, cependant, la famille Pio se scinde en trois branches distinctes : Albertino, Gibertino et Galassino ; du nom des trois frères Alberto III, Galasso ... ...
