Der Ursprung dieses Familiennamens findet sich in der Apherese des lombardischen Namens „Liutprand“. Nach den uns überlieferten Überlieferungen erlangte die Familie den Adel des Heiligen Römischen Reiches durch das am 16. Jänner 1626 in Wien verliehene Diplom Ferdinands II.; dieser Adel wurde mit einem Diplom von Kaiser Ferdinand I. am 21. November 1839 unter Hinzufügung des Prädikats Hulmhort bestätigt und in den Rang des österreichischen Adels erhoben. 1842 wurde die Familie in das Tiroler Immatrikulationsamt eingetragen und hatte mit Brief vom 20. April 1847 von SS Pius IX., Oberster Papst, den Titel eines Grafen des Heiligen Stuhls (mpr.). Er und seine Nachkommen verbündeten sich mit Calò, Bonomo, Coppo, Francol de Francolsperg, Saurer, Peckel de Ehrenlieb, Fecondo ...
