Antica e nobile famiglia del Regno di Napoli, originariamente conosciuta come Popolo, di chiara ed avita virtù, divisasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diversi rami, alcuni dei quali, per fenomeni di fonetica dialettale, hanno assunto il nome di Puopolo, Puopoli o Populi. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, la famiglia ebbe ampi possedimenti terrieri sin almeno dal secolo decimo sesto quando già risulta tra le nobili della città di Napoli. Molto fedeli alla corona aragonese, gli esponenti di questo casato accrebbero la propria fortuna grazie alle ricompense per l'essersi distinti in battaglia ed in trattative diplomatiche. Entrando in possesso di feudi anche oltre i confini campani, la casata ha così diramato anche in Puglia, Calabria e Sicilia. A partire dal XVIII secolo però la maggior parte dei Popolo o Puopolo si dedicarono all'esercizio delle professioni giuridiche, addottorandosi in entrambe le leggi.
