The first knight of this family is a noble of the kingdom of León in early XII century, Velasco Petriz, undoubtedly the first of this lineage. Alfonso VII the emperor (1126-1157) and Fernando II (1157-1188), gave him with all the crown land they had in the valley of Quiroga, on which strengthens and perpetuates the namesake lineage. Don Velasco Petriz married Jimena Rodriguez Diaz, of noble lineage from León, around the year 1140. From this union were born: Pedro Velásquez (b. 1142) who inherited from his father the lands of Losada, in El Bierzo, as well as other lands in the region of Cea and of León; Ruy Vázquez (b. 1145); Alvaro Velásquez.
